LAWYERS ALERT & NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION HOST TECHNICAL WORKSHOP ON ADDRESSING DISCRIMINATION AND VULNERABILITIES IN IDP COMMUNITIES

Lawyers Alert, in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), is pleased to announce the convening of a high-level Technical Workshop on Addressing Discrimination and Vulnerabilities in IDP Communities, scheduled to be held on 8 December 2025 at the NHRC Headquarters, Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Maitama, Abuja.

The workshop will be one of the key activities marking the 30th Anniversary of the National Human Rights Commission, commemorating three decades of Nigeria’s journey from military rule to democratic consolidation and strengthening of human rights protections.

Internal displacement remains one of the country’s most urgent human rights challenges, with millions of citizens forced from their homes due to insurgency, banditry, communal violence, and climate-related crises. Displaced persons continue to face discrimination, insecurity, exclusion from essential services, and barriers to justice, conditions that demand coordinated, rights-based action from both state and non-state actors.

This year’s convening comes at a critical moment, as humanitarian needs escalate and many IDP communities struggle with protection gaps. The workshop will serve as a space for honest reflection on what has worked, what has failed, and where deeper commitment is needed. It will bring together civil society actors, community leaders, human rights defenders, and government representatives to advance sustainable and people-centred solutions.

Speaking on the significance of the workshop, Dr. Rommy Mom, President of Lawyers Alert, emphasized the urgency of collective action, stating:“Every displaced person deserves dignity, protection, and justice. This workshop is not just a conversation; it is a call to action. We must confront the failures, strengthen the successes, and recommit to solutions that place the rights of IDPs at the centre of national priority.

Lawyers Alert and the NHRC encourage all invited stakeholders to participate in this important engagement, as part of the collective effort to safeguard the dignity, rights, and well-being of displaced populations across Nigeria.

Signed:

Jerome Uneje

Deputy President, Lawyers Alert
