Lawyers Alert participated in the final meeting of the Technical Working Group on Crisis Trajectories and Mitigation Planning, convened by the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in collaboration with the Development Research and Projects Center (dRPC), a renowned Nigerian NGO, and the Chronic Poverty Advisory Network (CPAN) of the Institute for Development Studies at Sussex.

This high-level gathering, held on April 28, 2025, at Hawthorne Suites Abuja, brought together government officials, civil society organizations, and policy experts to forge consensus on anticipated crises and finalize strategic recommendations for national policy action.

In a powerful show of solidarity and resistance against sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), Lawyers Alert Nigeria marched alongside the Dorothy Njemanze Foundation in a vibrant and defiant Denim Day Street Bomb.

Creating security education and consciousness, rebuilding trust between communities and the security architectures, and putting people at the center of security dialogues that concern them. This is #communitypolicing

Today, we screened the impact documentary of the Community Policing Project to key state actors in Benue State. It was a timely and strategic opportunity to showcase the diverse approaches to enhancing community security.

In light of the growing security challenges across the state, the community policing model implemented by Lawyers Alert Nigeria with support from the Open Society Foundations over the past two years offers a viable framework to bridge the gap between formal security architecture and grassroots communities. It brings both institutions and citizens to the forefront of the security conversation.

At the heart of the Community Policing Project is a simple but powerful belief: securing our communities is a collective responsibility, one that must include women and young people.

During the screening, state actors unanimously acknowledged the relevance of the project, affirming that it is more critical now than ever. They also committed to mainstreaming and scaling it as part of the broader Benue State security strategy.

Implemented in the pilot communities of Guma and Katsina-Ala LGAs, this project stands as a testament to what is possible when communities are empowered to take ownership of their safety.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all the state actors who took the time to share in the vision for a safer, stronger Benue State.

Lawyers Alert is participating with other stakeholders in a 3-day Engagement on the review and implementation of anti-discrimination programs under the HIV/AIDS (Anti-Discrimination) Act, 2014.

The meeting which is being hosted by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in collaboration with the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) and the Global Fund is focused on strengthening the legal and policy frameworks that protect the rights and dignity of persons living with HIV in line with the 2014 Act.

Represented by its Director, Legal; Mr. Bamidele A. Jacobs LA participated in the panel discussion that considered the practical implications of the Act for employers, schools and health facilities.
The meeting also reviewed the anti-discrimination Act with a view to identifying existing gaps and proferring relevant solutions.

Lawyers Alert Advocacy Yields Impact!

Following the advocacy visit to AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Benue on January 31st, 2025, by the Benue advocacy team under the Advancing Capacity and Reducing Vulnerability in Nigeria project funded by the Elton John AIDS Foundation we are pleased to announce a significant outcome.

On, April 15th, 2025, AHF has commissioned a One-Stop Shop (OSS) in Makurdi, Benue State, dedicated to providing unfettered, stigma-free healthcare services to members of the key population community.

This marks a crucial step toward equitable access to healthcare and a safer, more inclusive environment for all.

Historic Step Toward Justice in Benue State.

Last week, Lawyers Alert joined legal experts and human rights advocates in the first comprehensive review of the Benue State Penal Code since 2004.

We championed reforms that uphold dignity and justice, including:
• Decriminalizing poverty by scrapping petty offenses like idleness and vagabondage
• Protecting women’s rights, including clearer laws on marital rape
• Replacing caning with community service and other humane sentencing options
• Promoting mental health by treating, not jailing, those who attempt suicide
• Removing colonial-era laws that no longer belong in a just society

This review, led by Partners West Africa Nigeria with MacArthur Foundation support, marks a vital move toward laws that protect, not punish.

Lawyers Alert Nigeria recently participated in a Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) organized by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). These engagements are part of the broader 2025 initiative focused on strengthening the protection of Forcibly Displaced Persons (FDPs), including Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), Refugees, Asylum Seekers, and Returnees in Nigeria.

The event brought together Human Rights Monitors (HRMs), Community Protection Action Groups (CPAGs), and relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) with protection mandates. The project’s inclusive approach aimed to gather crucial information, enhance data collection and documentation practices, and guide strategic interventions to safeguard and advance the human rights of displaced populations.

Lawyers Alert joins other stakeholders to sensititise communities on TB, in commemoration of 2025 World Tuberculosis (TB) Day. Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria’s First Lady, graced the event as the Special Guest of Honour.

This year’s theme, Commit, Invest, Deliver, highlights the urgent need for global action to tackle TB and ensure that every individual has access to the resources they need to fight the disease.

In commemoration of World Tuberculosis Day, Lawyers Alert joined communities, advocates, and stakeholders for a road walk to unite in the mission to #EndTB. This year’s theme, “Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver,” serves as a bold call to action for hope, urgency, and accountability in the fight against tuberculosis.

We stand together to emphasize a critical message: Tuberculosis is curable, treatable, and preventable!

But it’s not just about the medical facts. We must also raise awareness about the fundamental rights of People Affected by TB (PATB). These individuals have the right to work, to associate, to receive free treatment, and to live with dignity—just like any other person.
