*Janet Asor* has gained access to legal support and awareness of her rights through Lawyers Alert’s Legal Clinic in the Internally Displaced Persons Camp in Benue State. This intervention empowers her and others to report violations, seek justice, and begin restoring their dignity and hope.

For the past ten years, Janet and her family have lived in displacement in Benue State, facing not only loss but ongoing rights violations. After losing her husband, she has struggled with limited access to healthcare, inadequate shelter, and barriers to justice, challenges common among displaced persons in camp settings

Lawyers Alert Strengthens Collaboration with Ogun State PHCDB to Advance STOP Guidelines

Lawyers Alert has secured strategic collaboration with the Ogun State Primary Health Care Board to advance the Safe Termination of Pregnancy (STOP) guidelines and improve access to reproductive rights for women and girls in the state.

During a recent working visit to Dr Elijah Ogunsola, the Executive Secretary in Abeokuta, we shared progress on our interventions, including ongoing litigation efforts in the state. The Executive Secretary commended our work and affirmed the Board’s commitment to supporting further initiatives aligned with its priorities.

He highlighted the urgency of addressing maternal mortality linked to unsafe termination of pregnancy and emphasised the need to sensitise key stakeholders, including the judiciary and lawmakers, on the sociological and legal dimensions of reproductive rights.

Lawyers' Alert condemns FCT minister’s threat against journalist, calling for accountability and protection of press freedom.

Lawyers Alert condemns in the strongest terms the recent threat of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike to the anchor of Politics Today on Channels Television, Mr. Seun Okinbaloye. The Minister had remarked that if there was any way to break the screen of his television, he would have shot the journalist. The threats were issued in response to concerns raised by the Channels anchor as to the potentials of the leadership crisis in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) impacting on opposition politics ahead of 2027. Indeed, it was bad that this threatening statement was made at all, but it is inconceivable that same was made during a live interview.

Lawyers Alert perceives the statement credited to the Minister as dangerous and unbecoming of any Nigerian, much more a public figure of his stature. Journalists play a vital role in the nurturing of any democracy to maturity and therefore the Minister should know enough to recognise that the Channels anchor was only performing his legitimate duties by raising these concerns. Often described as the fourth estate of the realm, the media owes a crucial duty to inform, educate and entertain the public. The media act as a watchdog over other arms of government and their institutions.

Such a statement from the Minister is capable of inciting violence against journalists and instilling fear in the minds of members of the ‘pen profession’. The remarks further risks intimidating media practitioners and could create a hostile environment for journalists in the day-to-day practice of their profession. Besides, this kind of threat, if not promptly checked, could create serious tensions capable of disrupting the collective efforts to entrench a free and civilized society.

Lawyers Alert participates in Training Youth on Digital Human Rights Reporting in Benue.

Our President, Dr. Rommy Mom, was part of Resource persons that trained youths in Benue State on the use of modern digital technologies for localized human rights reporting and community-led documentation, strengthening grassroots accountability and amplifying community voices.

Speaking at the one-day event hosted by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), United Nations, in partnership with National Human Rights Commissions and Lawyers Alert, Dr. Mom highlighted the vital role of technology in combating human rights abuses, noting that digital tools improve real-time reporting, evidence gathering, and the visibility of violations.

He further encouraged participants to apply these skills to document cases in their communities, engage relevant stakeholders, and contribute to building a more transparent, responsive, and rights-respecting society.

At the event, our M&E Officer Francisca Uhembe was awarded a Certificate of Achievement in recognition of her outstanding participation and demonstrated proficiency throughout the program, highlighting the practical impact and dedication of Lawyers Alert staff in advancing human rights reporting.

Dissolution of Marriage in the Interest of Safety and Justice

With free legal support from Lawyers Alert Nigeria, the court granted Mrs. C a dissolution of her marriage, which had been marked by non-disclosure of a serious medical condition, refusal to adhere to treatment, and actions that placed her life at risk.

The case was referred by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), underscoring the importance of coordinated support between civil society and national institutions in protecting vulnerable individuals.

Today, Mrs. C is free from a harmful situation, and her story serves as a powerful reminder that everyone deserves safety, dignity, and protection under the law.

Lawyers Alert increased awareness on the links between mining activities, community safety, and sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) in Benue State through a multi-stakeholder consultative roundtable.

Community members shared their lived experiences, government representatives discussed existing laws and policies regulating mining activities, while civil society organizations highlighted human rights violations and critical gaps in protection.

The roundtable enabled stakeholders to identify risks and explore practical ways to protect affected communities, while emphasizing the need for accountability, responsible resource governance, and stronger collaboration.

Through our Legal Clinic at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Benue State, our legal team documented cases of rights violations while continuing to deliver critical, rights-based support to vulnerable populations. We also conducted child rights awareness sessions that equipped families with practical knowledge to protect children from abuse and exploitation.

By providing free legal services, including counselling, complaint documentation, and referrals, we are expanding access to justice for displaced communities. Survivors who had limited avenues for redress can now pursue their rights, while violations that might have gone unreported are being properly documented and addressed.

Beyond addressing immediate legal concerns, this intervention is restoring dignity, strengthening protection mechanisms within the camp, and promoting a culture of accountability. It empowers displaced persons to speak up, seek justice, and safeguard families' rights despite the challenges of displacement.

During the practical session, participants were divided into two groups, identifying different projects through the budget tracking portal and outlining practical steps to monitor and determine the status of each project.

After the group activity, participants pledged to track at least one project each in Otukpo and Katsina-Ala Local Government Areas. The session also guided them in developing simple Community Budget Monitoring Plans.

Participants emphasized that the exercise enhanced their skills and provided them with the tools needed to effectively track projects in their local government areas.

In the third and fourth sessions, CBOs learned practical ways to track projects in their local government areas and use the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act to enhance grassroots accountability. Facilitated by Linus Egwu, participants explored federal tracking tools, the FAAC Portal, fund releases, and project implementation monitoring.

Participants shared experiences, highlighting successes and challenges such as delayed funds, limited project information, and low community participation. Facilitators offered solutions, emphasizing systematic documentation, timely reporting, and collaboration with local authorities.

The sessions concluded with a charge for CBOs to prioritize project tracking and share their findings with communities, fostering transparency and strengthening grassroots accountability.

The second session focused on the importance of citizen participation in the budget process, where Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) were equipped with the knowledge and tools to demand transparency and accountability from local government authorities on budget allocation and utilization.

Facilitated by Linus Egwu, our Senior Communications Officer, the session highlighted how active citizen engagement strengthens accountability, reduces corruption, promotes inclusive decision-making, and supports equitable resource allocation.

Participants also gained a clearer understanding of government budgeting and spending in Nigeria, including the concept of capital expenditure and its relevance to community development.

In the first session of the capacity-building programme on strengthening citizen oversight in budget tracking and fiscal accountability for Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), participants were equipped with a deeper understanding of their role as watchdogs within their communities.

They received practical guidance on how to monitor budget allocations, engage relevant stakeholders, identify and report gaps, and advocate effectively for transparency and accountability in public spending.

Facilitated by our Advisor Legal, Solomtochukwu Ozubulu Esq, the session also provided an overview of Nigeria’s budget system, explaining how federal funds flow to states and local governments. It highlighted the three tiers of financial planning, the Federation Account distribution process, and the key bottlenecks affecting fund flow, underscoring the importance of budget tracking.

Lawyers Alert has commenced a one-day capacity building workshop aimed at strengthening citizen oversight on budget tracking and fiscal accountability for Community-Based Organizations (CBOs). The training is structured to deliver practical impact by equipping participants with the tools and knowledge required to monitor public spending, promote transparency, and actively engage in governance processes within their communities, ultimately driving more accountable and responsive local systems.

The participating CBOs, drawn from Otukpo and Katsina-Ala Local Government Areas, are expected to leave the training with enhanced skills in analyzing budget data, tracking government allocations and expenditures, and applying evidence-based advocacy strategies to demand accountability. These outcomes are expected to contribute to improved service delivery, stronger citizen-government engagement, and increased community participation in decision-making.

In his opening remarks, Barrister Victor Eboh emphasized that the training is designed to strengthen the capacity of CBOs to engage government institutions constructively while promoting participatory governance. He noted that empowering citizens with the right tools and knowledge is essential for reinforcing accountability systems and ensuring that public resources are effectively utilized for sustainable community development.

Yesterday, we joined stakeholders at the launch of the Multisectoral Accountability Framework for Tuberculosis (MAF-TB) and the official rollout of Lenacapavir (LEN PrEP), a long-acting injectable for HIV prevention.

The event formed part of the activities to commemorate World TB Day 2026, bringing together government agencies, development partners, and civil society actors to drive national health priorities and strengthen multisectoral collaboration in Nigeria.

Our participation further reinforced our commitment to advancing health rights, community-led solutions, and equitable access to TB and HIV services. It also provided an opportunity to engage with key stakeholders, advocate for accountability in health service delivery, and support the scaling of innovative interventions such as LEN PrEP to reach vulnerable populations.

Lawyers Alert commends the Federal Government of Nigeria, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), and the National HIV, Viral Hepatitis, and STDs Control Programme (NASCP) for the introduction of the long-acting HIV prevention injection, Lenacapavir, into Nigeria. This important development marks a significant step towards expanding HIV prevention options and demonstrates continued efforts to strengthen the national HIV response.

For many Nigerians, especially key and vulnerable populations, long-acting prevention options like this have the potential to reduce stigma, improve adherence, and increase uptake of preventive services. While we celebrate this important scientific milestone, it is critical to emphasise that a medical breakthrough such as this should be accessible to those who need it most.

At the Policy Dialogue on the implementation of the Benue State Disability Law 2025, we called for the immediate establishment of the Benue State Disability Commission and the inclusion of persons with disabilities in governance. This step is essential to move from policy to action and ensure their voices are reflected in decision-making.

For us, this is about justice and inclusion. Implementing the law will strengthen support systems, improve access to services, and promote equal participation, leading to more responsive and inclusive governance.

Lawyers Alert has called for the speedy establishment of the Benue State Disability Commission and the full implementation of the Benue State Disability Law 2025, emphasizing that operationalizing the Commission is critical to protecting the rights, dignity, and inclusion of persons with disabilities across the state.

The organization stressed that the timely enforcement of the law will strengthen institutional support systems, improve access to essential services, and enable persons with disabilities to fully participate in social, economic, and governance processes.

The call was made while the President of Lawyers Alert, Rommy Mom, represented by the Associate Director, Victor Eboh ESQ, delivered a keynote address at a two-day policy dialogue on the implementation of the Disability Law, organized by the Nigerian Women Trust Fund.

The dialogue brought together government agencies, civil society organizations, and community stakeholders, fostering meaningful discussions and producing concrete recommendations to translate the law into tangible opportunities, measurable impact, and strengthened disability rights across the State.

At the launch of the Benue People-Centered Public Safety Programme, the Chairman of the Community Policing Committee in Guma highlighted the impact of Lawyers Alert’s intervention in addressing community safety concerns. He noted that the capacity-building support has strengthened the committee’s ability to engage with communities, respond effectively to security challenges, and promote people-centered approaches to public safety across the local governement.

Today we are reminded that safeguarding the dignity, safety, and rights of women and girls is key to building inclusive communities. Protecting women’s rights, ending violence, and ensuring access to justice are vital steps toward equality and sustainable development.
