COMMUNITIES, RIGHTS AND GENDER (CRG) DYNAMICS AND APPROACH IN ENDING TB.

  • Globally, women are disproportionately affected by violence, harmful patriarchal practices, forced isolation and other forms of discrimination – and this harmful impact is often compounded by poverty and other vulnerabilities. While everyone is entitled to live a life free from discrimination, women and girls are among the most vulnerable groups to abuse and harassment and have limited access to adequate health care. A right-based and gender-sensitive TB response is both an ethical imperative and a pillar of public health.

Billows of smoke, lifeless bodies, charred cars, and deserted streets best describe the scenarios in Buruku, Ukum, and, to a lesser degree, Kwande Local Government Areas recently attacked in Benue State of North Central Nigeria. For some time now, the people of Benue have been under heavy attacks from different fronts ranging from militia herdsmen, marauding gunmen, and other sources in between. An estimated 200 lives have been lost with many more maimed or wounded. This situation has left the people, especially Women and Children, as the main victims of these unfortunate attacks

BENUE: TROUBLING SIGNS AND NEED FOR IMMEDIATE ACTIONS

In March 2017, the local government areas of Buruku and Ukum in Benue state were attacked by hundreds of well-armed and well-coordinated gunmen arriving in vehicles and motorcycles. Each attack took the people of the area and security agents totally unawares and scores of lives, mostly those of women and children were needlessly lost. Speculations about the attacks range from suggestions that the killings were the aftermath of aggrieved herdsmen to intra-ethnic bickering to external attacks from a neighboring state.
