LAWYERS ALERT PERSPECTIVE ON THE NIGERIA'S GENERAL ELECTIONS 2023

On February 25, 2023, the Presidential Elections were conducted in Nigeria, resulting in the victory of Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President-elect. Tinubu, a former senator and governor of Lagos state, won the election with 8,794,740 ballots and 36.61 percent of the vote.
The runners-up included former vice president Atiku Abubakar of the People's Democratic Party and former governor of Anambra state, Mr. Peter Obi of the Labor Party, who have challenged the results.

2023: THE YOUTHS, DIFFERING OPINIONS, AND WOMEN PARTICIPATION.

As the 2023 election approaches, the questions of the youths, differing opinions, and women’s participation are vital issues that can deepen democracy, yet largely unattended to.
The Youths form 65% of the registered voters in Nigeria, this is not only in regard to the 2023 election but also the preceding elections. Trends have shown that youths (men and women) have largely been unable to impact the elections and/or contest and win political offices.

PRE-ELECTIONS DIGITAL SAFETY TRAINING FOR HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS AND CIVIL SOCIETY

The objective of the meeting was: to bring together key existing and new Meta partners focusing on issues affecting human rights civic engagement in the digital space and also address areas of concerns, share interventions that have been introduced to enhance online protections for users.
The meeting started with a welcome address from Meta Representatives and introduction from participants alongside their individual expectations for the event.

BACKGROUND

Recently, the House Committee on Electoral matters invited Memoranda from relevant stakeholders and the general public to a 1-day Public Hearing on the “Proposed bill seeking to establish the National Electoral offences Commission and for related matters. In response to this call, Lawyers Alert has put together this memorandum highlighting certain areas of concern that will address some salient provisions of the proposed Bill.

SNAP ASSESSMENT OF THE PERFORMANCE OF THE POST TRAINING JUDICIAL PANEL OF INQUIRY IN NIGERIA POST #ENDSARS PROTEST POST-TRAINING FACILITATED BY ICJ, LA AND NHRC

INTRODUCTION
​
This report assesses the outcome of the capacity-building exercise facilitated by Lawyers Alert and the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), in partnership with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), for Judges and Judicial Panel Members sitting in 30 states in December 2020 in terms of progress and success rate of the panels. This evaluation is based on desk review, field visits, and interviews with project beneficiaries and partners.

JUDICIAL PANELS OF INQUIRY: LAWYERS ALERT’S INTERVENTION IN ABIA STATE
11/11/2020 to 13/04/2021
Upon the approval to constitute Judicial Panels of inquiry to investigate the events that led to the #ENDSARS protests that took place in 2020 in Nigeria and the human rights abuses on citizens by security operatives; the National Human Rights Commission’s Executive Secretary, Mr Anthony O. Ojukwu constituted the said Panels in 32 States of the Federation.

ADVOCACY VISIT TO LAWYERS ALERT BY RIGHT TO LIFE INITIATIVE

Right to Life Initiative, a Key and Affected Population (KAP) focused organization paid an advocacy visit to Lawyers Alert on the 20th of January, 2020 to discuss issues of mutual interest and strengthening of ties between the two organizations.

LAWYERS ALERTS’ OFFICE AND THE OPEN SOCIETY FOUNDATION (OSF) DISCUSS SHRINKING CIVIC SPACE
6th February 2020
On the 6th of February 2020, a representative of the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) and Open Society Foundation (OSF) and Lawyers Alert rubbed minds on the shrinking civic space and notable Bills like NGO Bill, Social Media Bill, False Information Bill, etc. before the Nigeria parliament. At this meeting were Jeff and Anita from OSF, while LA was represented by Olayemi, Blessing, Roseline, and Bamidele.
