LAWYERS ALERT PERSPECTIVE ON THE NIGERIA'S GENERAL ELECTIONS 2023

2nd May 2023

On February 25, 2023, the Presidential Elections were conducted in Nigeria, resulting in the victory of Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President-elect. Tinubu, a former senator and governor of Lagos state, won the election with 8,794,740 ballots and 36.61 percent of the vote.

 

The runners-up included former vice president Atiku Abubakar of the People's Democratic Party and former governor of Anambra state, Mr. Peter Obi of the Labor Party, who have challenged the results.

2023: THE YOUTHS, DIFFERING OPINIONS, AND WOMEN PARTICIPATION.

As the 2023 election approaches, the questions of the youths, differing opinions, and women’s participation are vital issues that can deepen democracy, yet largely unattended to.

The Youths form 65% of the registered voters in Nigeria, this is not only in regard to the 2023 election but also the preceding elections. Trends have shown that youths (men and women) have largely been unable to impact the elections and/or contest and win political offices.
