Lawyers Alert Advocates Key Amendments to Strengthen Human Rights Protections in Nigeria

Lawyers Alert has proposed critical amendments to the Human Rights Defenders (Protection) Bill 2025 and the National Human Rights Commission Act (Repeal and Enactment) Bill 2025 aimed at reinforcing protections for human rights defenders, clarifying obligations for public authorities, and strengthening civic space, accountability, and the rule of law in Nigeria.

The proposals were presented during a Public Hearing on the bills at the House of Representatives, attended by lawmakers, civil society representatives, and other stakeholders. Lawyers Alert was represented by Ifechi Aleke, Esq., who submitted a memorandum expressing strong support for the legislation while advocating for specific amendments to ensure the bills provide practical protections for human rights defenders and enable effective oversight of public authorities.
