Lawyers Alert conducted a two-day capacity-building training for staff of Spring of Hope for the Girl Child in Makurdi, Benue State, focused on strengthening participants’ capacity to identify early warning signs of conflict and respond effectively to emerging threats within their communities. The training formed part of broader efforts to enhance community-based protection systems and promote proactive approaches to conflict prevention and peacebuilding.

Facilitated by the Associate Director of Lawyers Alert, Victor Eboh Esq., the sessions provided participants with practical insights into conflict dynamics, early warning indicators, and the factors that contribute to violence and instability at the community level. Participants were equipped with tools and strategies to support timely interventions, improve information gathering and sharing, and strengthen local response mechanisms in conflict-prone environments.

The training combined both theoretical learning and practical exercises designed to build participants’ understanding of rights-based approaches to conflict prevention and community protection. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of community-led mechanisms, highlighting the critical role local actors play as first responders in identifying risks, preventing escalation, and safeguarding vulnerable populations, especially women, children, and displaced persons.

Through interactive modules, group exercises, and scenario-based discussions, participants explored a range of thematic areas including conflict analysis, community mediation techniques, risk detection

and reporting, safe information sharing, referral pathways, and ethical engagement guided by the “Do No Harm” principle. The sessions also encouraged participants to strengthen collaboration with relevant stakeholders in order to improve coordinated responses to insecurity and community tensions.

The engagement reinforced the importance of investing in local capacity and empowering grassroots actors with the knowledge and frameworks needed to respond effectively to conflict situations. Lawyers Alert remains committed to supporting community-based initiatives that promote safety, resilience, inclusion, and sustainable peace across Benue State and beyond.
