As part of Lawyers Alert’s ongoing campaign to advance reproductive rights and access to justice for women and girls, the Director of Legal Services, Bamidele Jacobs, has made strategic media appearances on Ogun State Television (OGTV) and the Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC).

During the televised and radio engagements, Jacobs addressed critical issues surrounding reproductive rights in Nigeria, with a particular focus on the legal framework governing sexual and reproductive health, access to care, and the protection of women and girls from rights violations. The appearances form part of Lawyers Alert’s broader public education and strategic communication efforts to deepen public understanding of reproductive justice and influence policy and social change at the state and national levels.

Speaking on the programmes, Barr. Jacobs emphasized that reproductive rights are fundamental human rights guaranteed under national and international legal instruments to which Nigeria is a party. He underscored the obligation of government institutions to ensure access to accurate information, quality healthcare services, and legal protection, especially for women and young people who are disproportionately affected by restrictive practices, stigma, and misinformation.

He further clarified the legality of post-abortion care in Nigeria, noting that access to life-saving post-abortion services is lawful and essential to protecting the right to life, health, dignity, and privacy. According to him, denial of such care not only endangers lives but also constitutes a violation of established legal and human rights standards. He also highlighted the role of strategic litigation and legal advocacy in expanding access to reproductive health services and holding duty-bearers accountable.

The sessions on OGTV and OSBC provided an interactive platform for public engagement, with callers and viewers raising questions on reproductive health, consent, medical confidentiality, and the responsibilities of healthcare providers. Jacobs used the opportunity to dispel common misconceptions and encouraged survivors of rights violations to seek legal redress and support.

The media engagements reaffirm Lawyers Alert’s commitment to using the law, media advocacy, and community engagement to promote reproductive justice, protect healthcare providers acting within the law, and ensure that women and girls can exercise their reproductive rights without fear, stigma, or discrimination.

Lawyers Alert continues to work with partners, civil society organisations, and the media to amplify rights-based narratives and foster an enabling environment where reproductive rights are respected, protected, and fulfilled across Nigeria.
