Human rights organisation Lawyers Alert has entered into a partnership with Unique Secondary School, Makurdi, to advance climate justice awareness and environmental education among young people. The partnership was formalised during a courtesy visit by the Climate Justice Master of the school, Philip Iorkase, to the organisation’s office in Makurdi, where he was received by the Senior Programs Officer, Elvis Torkuma, and the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Francisca Uhembe.
During the meeting, both institutions acknowledged the growing environmental challenges affecting communities across Nigeria and stressed that climate justice has become an urgent priority. They agreed to build a collaborative partnership aimed at leveraging their expertise, strengthening institutional capacity, and promoting coordinated action to address climate change and its impacts.
As part of the collaboration, Unique Secondary School will strengthen its Climate Justice Club and implement a series of educational workshops and community outreach programmes designed to engage students and local residents in discussions on climate change and sustainable environmental practices. The school expressed appreciation to Lawyers Alert for the partnership and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting environmental responsibility among students.
Officials of Lawyers Alert noted that the collaboration represents an important step toward deepening collective action and strengthening climate justice advocacy in Benue State and beyond. They added that partnerships with educational institutions are key to building awareness and empowering young people to become advocates for environmental protection and sustainable development.
