Lawyers Alert has trained and registered over six hundred Male Feminists as part of its sustained efforts to advance gender equality and prevent gender-based violence (GBV) in Nigeria. The initiative was showcased at the Summit on Male Feminism and GBV Prevention in Nigeria, convened by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development, where key stakeholders gathered to strengthen coordinated responses to GBV and promote inclusive approaches to prevention.
At the summit, Lawyers Alert was represented by Programme Officer, Elvis Torkuma, who delivered a comprehensive presentation on the achievements of the Male Feminist Project in North-East Nigeria. He highlighted a range of interventions implemented across Bauchi, Borno, and Gombe States,

including structured training of trainers, extensive community sensitisation campaigns, strategic advocacy visits to key stakeholders, and targeted media engagement aimed at reshaping narratives around masculinity and gender equality.
The initiative has strategically focused on engaging artisans, youth groups, and community influencers who hold significant influence within their local settings. These individuals were trained and supported to challenge harmful gender norms, promote positive behavioural change, and act as community advocates for gender equality and GBV prevention. This grassroots approach has helped to deepen community ownership of the fight against GBV and strengthen local accountability mechanisms.
The summit further highlighted the importance of sustained male engagement and multi-sectoral collaboration in addressing gender-based violence in Nigeria. Participants emphasized that transforming harmful social norms requires long-term commitment, continuous capacity building, and the active involvement of men as allies in promoting safe, inclusive, and equitable communities.
