Lawyers Alert has called for the expedited establishment of the Benue State Disability Commission and the full implementation of the Benue State Disability Law 2025, highlighting the critical need for institutional mechanisms to protect the rights, dignity, and inclusion of persons with disabilities across the state. The organization stressed that operationalizing the Commission is vital to translating legal provisions into practical benefits for persons with disabilities, ensuring access to education, healthcare, employment, and social services.

The call was made during a two-day policy dialogue on the implementation of the Benue State Disability Law, organized by the Nigerian Women Trust Fund, which brought together government officials, civil society actors, disability rights advocates, and community leaders. Dr. Rommy Mom, President of Lawyers Alert, was represented by Victor Eboh, Esq., Associate Director, who delivered a keynote address emphasizing the importance of translating legal frameworks into actionable programs that safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities.

In his address, Mr. Eboh underscored the role of the Disability Commission as a critical oversight and enforcement body that can monitor compliance with the law, coordinate disability-inclusive policies, and provide avenues for redress for violations. He also highlighted the need for collaboration between government agencies, civil society, and local communities to ensure that the Commission is effective and responsive to the needs of persons with disabilities.

Lawyers Alert further called on the Benue State Government to prioritize funding, staffing, and capacity-building for the Commission to enable it to operate fully. The organization emphasized that the timely operationalization of the Commission would not only promote inclusion and equality but also strengthen accountability and social justice mechanisms within the state.

This advocacy reflects Lawyers Alert’s ongoing commitment to human rights, inclusive governance, and the empowerment of vulnerable groups, positioning the organization as a leading voice in driving the effective implementation of disability rights legislation in Nigeria.
