United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Pays Working Visit to Lawyers Alert

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) recently paid a working visit to the headquarters of Lawyers Alert in Makurdi, Benue State. The delegation was led by the Abuja-based Senior Human Rights Advisor, Adwoa Kafure, as part of ongoing engagements to strengthen collaboration on human rights protection and community-based interventions.

During the visit, the President of Lawyers Alert, Dr. Rommy Mom, expressed appreciation for the engagement and reaffirmed the organisation’s strong and growing partnership with OHCHR. He provided an overview of Lawyers Alert’s human rights work in Benue State, highlighting key interventions, operational challenges, and emerging opportunities to deepen impact in conflict-affected communities.

Ms. Kafure commended Lawyers Alert for its pioneering work across Nigeria, with particular emphasis on the People-Centred Public Safety model. She noted OHCHR’s strong interest in the approach, especially in the context of ongoing conflict dynamics in North Central Nigeria. She also highlighted the forthcoming Nigeria country visit by the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion, encouraging civil society organisations to actively engage and contribute to the process.

The engagement further reinforced shared commitments to advancing human rights, strengthening community safety systems, and promoting inclusive approaches to conflict prevention. Lawyers Alert expressed its readiness to deepen collaboration with OHCHR in advancing safer communities and strengthening respect for human rights across Nigeria.
