Lawyers Alert, has established a legal clinic in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps to provide free legal services and rights awareness to displaced persons affected by conflict and insecurity. The initiative is aimed at strengthening access to justice for vulnerable populations who often lack the legal support needed to address the challenges they face in displacement.
The legal clinic will provide legal counselling, documentation support, mediation, and referrals for cases requiring further legal intervention. Many displaced persons in camps struggle with issues such as loss of personal documents, family separation, land and property disputes, gender-based violence, and other rights violations. By bringing legal services directly to the camps, Lawyers Alert hopes to close the gap between vulnerable communities and the justice system.

Speaking on the development, the President of Lawyers Alert, Dr. Rommy Mom, said the initiative reflects the organisation’s commitment to ensuring that displaced persons are not left behind in the pursuit of justice and protection. According to him, people living in IDP camps often face complex legal and social challenges but lack the knowledge and resources to seek redress.
He explained that the legal clinic will also focus on educating displaced persons about their rights through community sensitisation sessions, legal literacy campaigns, and engagement with camp leadership and humanitarian actors. These activities are expected to empower residents with knowledge about available legal protections and how to access them.
Dr. Mom further noted that the intervention aligns with the organisation’s broader efforts to promote human rights, gender equality, and access to justice for marginalized populations. He emphasized that legal protection is an important but often overlooked component of humanitarian response, especially in contexts where displacement exposes individuals to exploitation and abuse.
Lawyers Alert said it will continue working with community leaders, humanitarian organisations, and government institutions to ensure that the legal clinic effectively responds to the needs of displaced persons. The organisation believes that providing accessible legal services within the camps will help strengthen accountability, protect the rights of vulnerable groups, and contribute to building safer and more resilient communities.
